IMPD: Teen arrested after weekend east side shooting

INDIANAPOLIS — A 15-year-old has been taken into custody after he was reportedly involved in a shooting on the east side of Indianapolis.

Officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the teen was arrested on the following preliminary charges:

• Criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon
• Dangerous possession of a firearm by a minor
• Aggravated battery

The teen was not identified by IMPD in an update on Tuesday.

According to previous reports, officers were called to the 2500 block of North Sherman Drive on Saturday afternoon on a report of a shooting. When police arrived at the address, they found a woman who’d been shot. She was transported to an area hospital at that time in critical condition.

In an update from IMPD on Tuesday, officers said that the teen was deemed the suspect with the help of surveillance footage as well as the community. They reportedly learned that the teen fled from the location on foot at the time of the shooting.

Within 30 minutes of the shooting, the update read that the suspect was located and detained. The 15-year-old was reportedly in possession of two firearms when officers arrested him.

During a preliminary investigation into the shooting, detectives said they believe a disturbance occurred involving the teen inside a vehicle. The 15-year-old reportedly fired several shots and the woman was struck with gunfire. Officers stressed in the update that it is not believed that the teen and the woman knew each other.

IMPD officials said that the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision in relation to this case.
