‘I just knew I needed to save her’: Alabama man saves women from exploding home

CENTER STAR, Ala. (WHNT) — It was a smoky Friday morning for people who live on Pine Street in the Center Star community.

Perry Gooch has lived on Pine Street for years and he told News 19 exactly what he witnessed Friday morning.

“It went up in a matter of minutes; there’s a lot of items inside, cardboard and oxygen tanks and propane, and it was not your usual housefire,” Gooch said.

On Monday, and in daylight, the home had several busted windows and the front door completely gone. The home is also surrounded by fire tape, with several oxygen tanks in the front yard.

Gooch tells News 19 that the fire was unusual and sounded unusual.

“Yeah, it was several just small explosions and then a couple big ones. You know, one was an oxygen tank and the other ones, I don’t know how many oxygen tanks were in there but evidently several,” Gooch said.

Gooch also says he noticed his elderly neighbor standing out front of the fiery home, unable to move.

“I grabbed her and moved her as fast as I could, she’s in bad shape physically, to the north side of the house. And no sooner we get to the north side of the house the explosion blew out the windows, blew off the door and as you see, they hit the tree.” Gooch said.

The woman’s son was also able to make it to a safe spot as their home was in flames.

“Did what I was supposed to do at that time and that’s it. I hate it for them. They lost their home and that was my home growing up, but both of them are still alive,” Gooch said.

Center Star, Elgin, and Killen Volunteer fire departments worked together to get the fire out. We reached out to the volunteer fire department and they have not responded. Florence Fire tells News 19, they are still trying to figure out what sparked the fire.
