April is Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Month, and it’s a time that is meant to highlight the importance of getting screened for cancer, routinely.

Doctor Curtis Miyamoto, a radiation oncologist and professor James Waddington, who is a cancer survivor and participant in the American Cancer Society’s DetermiNation Endurance Program, joined us in the PHL17 studio to talk to us about why early detection and screenings are so important.

“Cancer is unfortunately increasing and now there are over 2 million new cases diagnosed every year, and that’s resulting in over 600,000 deaths, so it is so critical for us to be able to get out there and get early detection because that is the key to being cured from cancer,” says Dr. Miyamoto.

According to the American Cancer Society, “The mission of the American Cancer Society is to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.”
