CPD issue warning after rideshare passengers robbed in Wrigleyville, Gold Coast

CHICAGO – Chicago police are warning the public about a string of robberies in Wrigleyville and Gold Coast that happened over the past few months.

Police said the robberies happened at the following times and locations:

  • 3500 block of N. Clark St on January 5, 2025 at 1:30 a.m. (Wrigleyville)
  • 3500 block of N. Clark St on January 5, 2025 at 2:30 a.m. (Wrigleyville)
  • 3500 block of N. Clark St on January 11, 2025 at 1:10 a.m. (Wrigleyville)
  • 10 block of W. Division St on January 11, 2025 at 3:00 a.m. (Gold Coast)
  • 10 block of E. Elm St on January 12, 2025 at 2:16 a.m. (Gold Coast)

  • 3500 block of N. Clark on February 23, 2025 at 1:55 a.m. (Wrigleyville)
  • 3600 block of N. Clark on February 23, 2025 at 3:45 a.m. (Wrigleyville)
  • 3500 block of N. Clark on March 9, 2025 at 3:00 a.m. (Wrigleyville)
  • 20 block of W. Division on March 29, 2025 at 2:00 a.m. (Gold Coast)
  • 3500 block of N. Clark on April 13, 2025 at 1:30 a.m. (Wrigleyville)
  • 3500 block of N. Clark on April 13, 2025 at 1:40 a.m. (Wrigleyville)
  • 1000 block of W. Cornelia on April 13, 2025 at 2:00 a.m. (Wrigleyville)

In each of the above incidents, the victims were leaving a bar and waiting for a Lyft or Uber on the street. That’s when the suspect(s) approached them with a handgun and/or assaulted them while demanding their property before running off, according to investigators.

It doesn’t surprise me that something like this is happening here. Especially on busy nights, there’s so many taxi cabs, Ubers,” Wrigleyville resident Niko said.

Police said in several incidents, the victims’ banking information was accessed via cellphones taken during the robbery.

Police described the suspects as three to four young men between the ages of 16 and 25.

Additional tips from CPD:

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Dial 9-1-1 immediately and remain on scene when possible
  • Never pursue a fleeing assailant, provide the information to the police
  • Remember any unique physical characteristics (scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc.)
  • If video surveillance is available, save and make a copy of the incident for investigating detectives
  • If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information
