What are the most and least common last names in Kentucky?

KENTUCKY (FOX 56) — Did you know there are an estimated 191,000 unique last names in Kentucky?

Using data from the Forebears name meaning and database, FOX 56 compiled a list of the five most common and least common last names in Kentucky among the top 1,000 listed.

Nationally, the most common last name is Smith, according to Ancestry.com.

In fact, Smith is the most common last name in 40 of the 50 states in the U.S.

The most common last names in Kentucky are:

  • Smith
  • Johnson
  • Jones
  • Brown
  • Williams

Nearly 34,000 people in Kentucky have the last name of Johnson, accounting for 1.55% of the population, while people with the surname Williams make up 1.28% (24,612).

LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

The least common last names in Kentucky, among the top 1,000 options, are:

  • Swift
  • Coomes
  • Bass
  • Turpin
  • Fitzpatrick

Coincidentally, Forebears data shows that Swift, Coomes, and Bass are all tied, with 741 people each having those last names. This equals out to one out of every 6,052 people having said last names. Turpin and Fitzpatrick, however, are nipping at their heels; each having 742 people with said last names, they account for one out of every 6,044 Kentuckians.
