Officials in Cicero announce arrest of suspect in connection with decades-old homicide

CICERO, Ill. — Officials in the Town of Cicero have announced an arrest in connection with the murder of two military veterans, 30 years after their deaths.

Cicero police say they have arrested 49-year-old Daniel Flores, a current resident of Guanajuato, Mexico, who formerly lived in Cicero, in connection with the 1995 murders of 22-year-old John Fields and his 19-year-old brother Michael Fields.

According to police, the shooting unfolded in the 2900 block of 50th Court on April 12, 1995. Officers were called to the scene around 2 a.m. following a shots fired report and found the two victims lying in the street. The shooting is believed to have been the result of a disagreement with someone in the neighborhood.

The brothers, who were both military veterans, had each suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital, where they later died.

“On behalf of the Cicero Police Department, I’d like to extend our deepest condolences for the tragic loss of two brothers who proudly served our country as United States Marines,” Supt. Thomas Boyle of the Cicero Police Department said.

At the time of his death, John had just completed his service with the Marines that same year. Michael followed in his footsteps and was on leave while service in Japan.

The case eventually grew cold but was reopened in October of 2023.

A little over a year after it was reopened, authorities got a break in the case when a key witness was located and later provided officers corroborating evidence identifying Flores as the suspect.

On March 11, 2016, an arrest warrant was issued for Flores for first-degree murder.

Thanks to the help of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office – Special Prosecution Bureau, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Marshals Service, Flores was taken into custody in Guanajuato, Mexico, on Feb. 8, 2023.

“Through the power of the internet, social media, great detective work and the family’s support, we were able to pinpoint a better location,” Deputy Supt. Francisco Diaz of the Cicero Police Department said.

Authorities said Flores fought extradition for two years but was finally brought to the United States on April 9, 2025, to face charges.

After reviewing the case, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved two counts of first-degree murder against Flores, who was detained following his detention hearing.

“I want to express my gratitude to the dedicated detectives and everyone else involved in this case who never gave up,” Boyle said.
