LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A man driving a hearse led Indiana State Police on a pursuit through Lafayette and into West Lafayette late Friday night before being taken into custody, authorities said.
According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, the incident began shortly after 10 p.m. on April 11, when Trooper Miramontes observed a hearse traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Sagamore Parkway near Kossuth Street. The vehicle was reportedly displaying flashing red and white lights.
Before reaching South Street, the hearse corrected its direction and reentered the northbound lanes but then ran a red light at Sagamore Parkway and South Street, police said.
Trooper Miramontes attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit that continued through Lafayette and into West Lafayette. The chase ended at the intersection of Sachem Boulevard and Sachem Court, where the hearse came to a stop.
Police said the driver initially failed to comply with verbal commands but was eventually taken into custody without further incident.
The driver was identified as Herman Gray, 39, of Terre Haute. He was booked into the Tippecanoe County Jail on preliminary charges of:
No injuries were reported during the incident. The Indiana State Police were assisted by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
