Docs: 2 Muncie residents arrested after series of central Indiana storage unit burglaries

MUNCIE, Ind. — Two Muncie residents have been arrested after they were reportedly linked to a series of storage unit thefts in Muncie, Pendleton and Anderson.

According to court documents filed on Sunday in Delaware County, 37-year-old Bethaney Greenlee and 38-year-old Nicholas Smith. were both preliminarily charged with:

  • Four counts of burglary, each a Level 5 felony
  • Four counts of theft, each a Level 6 felony.

On Friday, officers from the Muncie Police Department conducted a search on a home in the 2700 block of South Mock Avenue in regards to a series of storage unit thefts.

This comes after law enforcement from Anderson and Pendleton reportedly identified Greenlee as a suspect in multiple incidents. The documents said Greenlee would reportedly rent from a storage unit facility and break into the units next to her by “breaking through the wall.”

As officers were conducting surveillance on the South Mock Avenue home, they reportedly saw a man, later identified as Smith, pull into the home’s driveway in a truck carrying several items, including a wood coffee table, lamps and chairs. The items were reported stolen earlier this month.

Police conducted a search of the home on Friday when Greenlee and Smith were inside the home. The documents claim that several items related to recent storage unit burglaries were located, including:

  • Atari gaming systems along with games
  • Air Jordan shoes

Smith was reportedly asked about multiple unit burglaries, including one in the 2600 block of North Granville on March 21. During this incident, the documents said that around $11,345 was stolen, as well as Jordan shoes and a college football national championship ring.

“Smith said he was upset about the rings and wanted to take them back because he knew they were important to someone,” the documents said.

Smith reportedly told police that Greenlee was with him during these burglaries. The documents said that Smith reportedly admitted to committing several of the storage unit burglaries in Pendleton and Anderson as well.

“There will be several more charges coming for this case,” the court documents said. “All the property removed from the house will be gone through and matched to victims for charges for each victim.”

Both Greenlee and Smith are being held on a $40,000 bond in Delaware County, or 10% cash/surety, according to the court documents.
