Peace for Preston Foundation hosts prom giveaway in honor of fallen officer

CHICAGO – The Class of 2025 is weeks away from graduation and teens across Chicagoland are gearing up and lining up for one of the most glamourous parties of their young lives.

On Saturday, the Peace For Preston Foundation invited the Class of 2025 to a prom giveaway at Wendell Smith Elementary.

“It was a major thing when we went prom shopping. It was a six-month ordeal,” Peace For Preston Founder Dionne Mhoon said.

Saturday’s giveaway was dedicated to the memory of fallen Chicago Police Officer Aréanah Preston. Her mother, Mhoon, started the foundation to ensure her daughter’s spirit for giving back lives on.

“Aréanah was really big on helping the community, so this is my way of stepping into her shoes and helping out the community,” Mhoon said.

Inside Wendell Smith Elementary, hundreds of dresses in all colors and styles awaited their new owner. Volunteers greeted students and helped them in their search for the perfect gown.

Students could also find jewelry, undergarments, shoes and participate in raffle giveaways for hairstyling costs.

“I want them to feel like dolls and princesses,” Mhoon said.

Suits, ties and special occasion wear for boys were also available.

Once a student narrowed down their choice, a bell was rung in celebration.

Students who spoke with WGN-TV said the giveaway helped offset some of the many costs that go with attending the milestone occasion.

“I feel like this is a good idea for people that are struggling to get prom tickets and dresses. I feel this is an amazing giveaway and it’s doing really good in the community,” student Zeniah Hodo said.

Mhoon wants students to feel empowered for their big day, something her daughter would have wanted.

“My main goal now is to live out her legacy and make an impact, even if it’s a small impact on our community,” Mhoon said.

Saturday’s giveaway was the second prom giveaway in honor of Preston.
