– The Shirley Burden Public Library in Hanceville recently hosted a Prom Makeup Class for girls of all ages. Since the class was primarily comprised of younger girls, Mary Kay Beauty Consultant Faith Hershberger focused on teaching age-appropriate skincare and simple makeup techniques to enhance the girls’ natural beauty.

After being inspired by a chance meeting with a makeup mentor in New York, Hershberger found a new appreciation for cosmetology and skincare. Now a full-time beauty consultant and part-time pilot, she lives in Hanceville with her husband and child. She said this class aimed to help build self-confidence, educate young girls on how to properly care for their skin and teach them to enhance their natural beauty rather than rely on heavy makeup products or cosmetic procedures.

“When we look good, we feel good. My mom was very adamant about skincare and hygiene growing up, and that stayed with me,” said Hershberger.

The girls were treated to a special experience. Each was given a small makeup palette to sample cleanser, moisturizer with sunscreen and CC cream. They also received a color card with eyeshadow and blush that complemented each of their unique features, like eye color or skin tone. They were taught techniques to identify their undertones, determine which colors most complement them, understand face shapes and use makeup to enhance natural features rather than cover them up. Hershberger stressed the importance of skincare more than anything else, explaining how a healthy skincare routine is the “base” of any makeup routine.

“Skincare is the base of a good, flawless makeup look… It’s like having a good canvas for painting,” she told them. “If your skin is smooth and healthy, your makeup will look that much better.”
