DOJ: Man sentenced after hiding $7.3M in drugs in spare tire in Fresno County

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man who was caught transporting drugs that he hid in a spare tire has been sentenced, the United States Department of Justice said.

The DOJ says Carlos Jordan Lopez, 29, was sentenced on Monday to 10 years in prison for possessing with the intent to distribute approximately 107 pounds of fentanyl and around 39 pounds of cocaine.

In September 2023, the California Highway Patrol said they conducted a traffic enforcement stop on a 2013 Toyota Camry driving on Interstate 5 near Shields Avenue in Fresno County.

Officers say they found drugs with an estimated value of $7.3 million. The drugs were found in a spare tire in the trunk, which was loaded with 28 packages containing around 485,000 fentanyl pills. CHP says a bag containing 18 “bricks” of cocaine powder.
