SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Videos online show crowds watching ‘A Minecraft Movie’ in theaters cheering wildly as part of a viral trend — but, after a recent event with streamers, air horns, and a live chicken in a Utah theater, some are saying the trend has gone too far.

Fans are reacting to game phrases that Jack Black, who plays Steve, says in the movie; specifically, the ‘Chicken Jockey’ line is causing quite a stir.

The trend has led to attendees cheering and throwing popcorn when the line is said, and some theaters are now putting up warnings. One warning at a local theater reads that if an audience member is disruptive, they will be escorted out by police.

On Tuesday, a movie-goer snuck in a live chicken and was later kicked out of the theater, according to online videos. Theater employees spoke with ABC4 about the incident, saying it started when a ‘giant group of rowdy college kids’ came in for a 10 p.m. showing, and yelled ‘Chicken Jockey’ as they scanned their tickets and headed into the theater.

Employees Chloee and Nicholas Gamble said shortly after, the group started blowing air horns, prompting workers to pause the movie.

“I paused the movie and then opened the window and told everyone that they needed to behave or else they were going to be asked to leave and no refunds would be given. For a while, they did quiet down, up until the ‘Chicken Jockey’ scene,” Nicholas said.

Chloee explained that as the scene came on the screen, she saw popcorn flying, confetti cannons, and — the strangest part — a live chicken being held up in the air. Immediately, staff ended the movie and asked the group to leave.

Chloee said on their way out, the group tossed the chicken at a security guard and were later captured on video holding the chicken by its legs in the theater parking lot.

“They were just manhandling the poor chicken, and it just hurts my heart to know that it was just so mistreated. It was just such an insane night,” she said. “I went home just so emotional and overwhelmed.”

Nicholas shared that he ended up staying past his shift to help and that it took a long time for staff to clean up after the incident.

“It was definitely crazy. I’ve been there many years and I haven’t experienced anything like that,” he said.

Following this incident, Chloee said it’s important to remember to be courteous when you go to see a movie.

“I’d like people to stop being so crazy in this because our theater employees don’t deserve this. These are college students trying to get by. These are just high schoolers. They don’t deserve the kind of chaos that ensued that night,” she said.

ABC4 reached out to the person who allegedly brought the chicken to the theater and is waiting to hear back.
