The crash happened at the CiCi’s Pizza on Jefferson Avenue, and multiple emergency agencies and Chapel Hill ISD staff are on the scene ensuring the safety of students.
“Of the victims that were transported, six individuals sustained minor injuries, three had moderate injuries, and one victim received critical injuries. The driver of the 4-Runner, a 79-year-old male, was evaluated by emergency medical staff and was uninjured as a result of the crash,” Mount Pleasant Police Department said.
Chapel Hill ISD is responding to a motor vehicle accident that occurred today in front of the CiCi’s Pizza restaurant during a 6th-grade field trip. Some students who were inside the restaurant at the time sustained injuries due to the impact of the crash. Emergency personnel are on site, and the district is working closely with them to ensure all students are accounted for and safe. Students who were not injured will be transported back to campus once the scene is secure. We will share confirmed updates as they become available. The district confirmed that all remaining students have been accounted for, reunited with parents, or safely returned to campus. District staff and counselors are available to support students and families as needed. Chapel Hill ISD asks for continued privacy for the families impacted and thanks the community for its support and understanding. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
Mount Pleasant Police Department said there were six juveniles and four adults injured as a result of the crash, and others who received minor injuries were evaluated and treated on the scene.
An employee at a nearby store who witnessed the immediate aftermath said she credits her military training with her ability to provide help during a chaotic situation.
“All we heard was the screech and then it sounded like a bomb went off. And the next thing all I saw was kids running, military kicked in, crowd control. I got everybody inside of the store. I didn’t know who was hurt or anything. Came out, there were a couple of girls who were complaining of back pain and head hurting. We got them on the ground. Got them stable, kept them talking.” said Brandie Rushing.
She also said that she saw a couple of kids who were pinned and at least one was taken away by helicopter.
