Utah company installs cameras at accident-prone intersections, provide free video of crashes

ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4) — A local business has installed traffic cameras across Utah at intersections with high accident rates.

CollisionCam launched in Sept. 2023. The company provides drivers with free video footage of accidents they were involved in free of charge. With cameras placed at popular intersections in Washington and Salt Lake Counties, CollisionCam has tried to cover locations where accidents are the most common.

Founder Tate Langston says he started the business after his truck was hit by a drunk driver who fled the scene after the incident.

“I remember reaching out to the city… and there was no evidence,” Langston said.

Since its launch, the cameras have captured some of the most intense crashes in the state, even helping police catch alleged hit-and-run suspects.

“We’re hoping it helps the community to keep things safer. Hopefully when someone gets in a crash they won’t take off because they know [they’re] being recorded,” Langston told ABC4.com.

According to Langston, tickets have even been overturned after reviewing camera footage.

“That’s been pretty cool to see… to help someone who wasn’t at fault [and] show what really happened,” Langston said.

Data from the Department of Public Safety shows 74 road fatalities in Salt Lake County during 2024, leading the state. Washington County ranked 4th in Utah with 17 deaths on the road.

CollisionCam has now installed cameras in 13 cities across Utah and regularly posts its most exciting footage on its social media accounts.
