BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — April 10, 2025
The Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) will shift to an asynchronous eLearning day on Monday, April 14, to allow educators and staff to participate in the Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA) Day of Action at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.
All in-person instruction will be suspended for the day, though Early Learning Center programs at the South and North campuses will remain open. Elementary and middle school after-school activities, including Extended Day programs, will be canceled.
MCCSC leaders said the decision reflects the urgent need to advocate against proposed state legislation that could significantly impact public school funding, including Senate Bill 1 and Senate Bill 518. According to reporting from WFYI, SB 1 alone could cost MCCSC as much as $15.1 million over the next three years.
“Tens of millions of dollars are at stake that support core instruction and critical resources. Without these dollars, our ability to provide the high-quality instruction that our children deserve and that our community expects, will be hindered,” said MCCSC Superintendent Markay L. Winston. “The MCCSC administration stands in solidarity with our teachers and staff in support of the students we serve every day. We encourage our community to call or write our legislators, asking them to adequately fund K-12 public education to keep critical funding and resources with the students we serve.”
Senate Bills 1 and 518 would change the way local property tax dollars are allocated and require public school districts to share tax revenues, including future operating referendum funds, with eligible charter schools. MCCSC identified this legislation as a major threat in its recent two-year financial stability plan.
While the eLearning day is expected to cause disruptions for some families, MCCSC will offer meal pick-up services at Templeton and Fairview Elementary Schools between 12:00 and 1:30 p.m. Families may request meals through an online form.
Instructional guidance for the asynchronous day has been shared with families and staff. Teachers will communicate lesson plans via Canvas and ParentSquare.
MCCSC serves approximately 10,000 students in 23 schools throughout Monroe County. The district is known for its focus on STEAM, environmental education, international programs, and college and career readiness pathways.
