Louisville comes together for 2 year anniversary of Old National Bank mass shooting

Five lives were lost, and eight others — including two LMPD officers — were injured when an employee opened fire inside the downtown bank.

Those killed were James Tutt, Juliana Farmer, Josh Barrick, Tommy Elliott, and Deana Eckert.

The two officers injured in the shooting were Officer Nickolas Wilt and Officer Cory “CJ” Galloway. Wilt and Galloway were the first officers on the scene. Wilt was critically injured when he was shot in the head while responding. He had recently graduated from the police academy on March 31.

Wilt spent several months in rehabilitation after the shooting; he has been released from the hospital, but his recovery continues.

Louisville is coming together at the Muhammad Ali Center for StoryFest — a celebration of resilience and healing through storytelling.

Six nonprofits will be honored and awarded grants to support their missions.

The event runs until 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

About the Old National Bank mass shooting

The Louisville Metro Police Department released an investigative file on Nov. 21, 2023, into the Old National Bank mass shooting.

The file included details about the shooting and journal writings by Connor Sturgeon. Authorities said they have now closed the investigation into the actions of the 25-year-old who died that day in a gunfire exchange with police.

Sturgeon’s writings included how it “was so easy” to purchase the assault rifle, a Radical Firearms RF-15, from a Louisville gun store, according to the police file.

He bought the rifle, 120 rounds, and four magazine cartridges for $700 six days before the shooting, and the process took about 45 minutes, he said.

Families of the victims and survivors filed a lawsuit against River City Firearms, arguing footage inside the store showing the transaction and the shooter’s body language implicated many red flags that should have stopped the sale

“That was a shooting that I know,” Gov. Andy Beshear said during a Team Kentucky briefing Thursday. “Ripped at the core and fabric of not just Louisville, but the entire Commonwealth. I lost my friend, Tommy, as well as an acquaintance, Jim Tutt, and a lot of other people lost people that they loved and cared about. The thing about grief is it hits you at unexpected times on unexpected days. But to me, I’m committed that the traumatic memory of my friend’s death shouldn’t overshadow all of the great memories of his life.”
