Fresno residents asked to mow their lawns to avoid being cited

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The time to mow is now – according to Cal Fire, Fresno County residents have until the end of the month to avoid being cited for overgrown lawns.

The Fresno County Fire Protection District says crews will be conducting drive-by inspections beginning May 1 to look for fire hazards and properties that require weed abatement.

To prepare for inspection and avoid a citation, residents are asked to cut long grass and weeds and to remove any accumulation of debris next to structures on their property.

According to the district’s website, weeds and dry grass need to be shorter than 4 inches, and weeds and debris need to be at least 50 feet from any structure.

If upkeep is not completed by May 1, the county’s Fire Protection District says the property will be deemed a fire hazard, and a Notice of Fire Hazard will be mailed to the property owner. Homeowners will then have 10 days to abate the issue, but if the situation is not remedied, the Fire District says they will dispatch a Fire Prevention Officer to issue a citation.

Residents are asked to mow and weed-wack before 10 a.m. to limit the possibility of starting a fire.
