Shreveport police were dispatched to the 6000 block of Tealwood Street regarding a reported physical assault on a juvenile. When they arrived, they discovered a seven-year-old child had been beaten with a piece of lumber by his father.
Officers say injuries and markings on the child’s body, and the child was brought to a local hospital via private vehicle for treatment. SPD Juvenile Crimes Division investigators were called to the scene.
The child’s father, Winston Taylor, returned to the residence while police were still on the scene. Through their investigation, officers learned that the incident started when the child received a conduct grade of “C” in school.
Taylor responded by allegedly striking the child multiple times with a 1×2 wooden board. The child’s face, buttocks, back, and legs were hit. Police noted that the child’s injuries were consistent with witness statements and the reported method of assault. Taylor was arrested on one count of cruelty to a juvenile.
Shreveport police encourage engaged parenting but urge residents to avoid using objects to hit or strike children, as these actions often result in criminal consequences.
