89th Masters Tournament | Friday updates

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – It’s cut day at Augusta National.

On Friday the field will be cut down to the top 50 players plus ties that will advance to the weekend at the 89th Masters Tournament. After overnight rain in Augusta, sunny but breezy conditions are expected for the second round.

Justin Rose (-7) of England, the 2013 U.S. Open champion and 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist, enters Friday’s second round with a three shot lead.

“When you are playing with the lead or around the lead, you have the ability or you’re afforded the luxury of patience and respecting holes and respecting pins and things like that,” Rose, making his 19th Masters appearance, said after Thursday’s opening round.

“When you’re in chase mode, you end up possibly making one or two silly bogeys by trying to play catch-up, and obviously that ultimately hampers the catch-up.”

Rose set a new Masters record by holding or sharing the 18-hole lead for a fifth time.

Behind Rose on the leaderboard are 24 golfers within three shots of each other, including two-time and defending Champion Scottie Scheffler and Corey Conners of Canada, both three back. In 18 of the last 20 Masters Tournaments, the eventual winner was in the top ten after the first round.

“I think anytime you get close to the lead, it’s going to be easier for you to win the golf tournament,” Scheffler said. “That’s a simple fact of the matter. You get off to a good start, statistically you’re going to have a better chance to win the tournament.”

“It’s a golf course that I love coming to,” Conners said. “I don’t know how you couldn’t love coming here. It’s a spectacular event, a spectacular golf course.”

Among the storylines on Friday will be two-time Champion Bernhard Langer (1985 and ’93) attempting to make the cut in his final Masters appearance at age 67. He shot 74 during Thursday’s opening round.

“There’s always memories to battle the course, but the red (outfit on Thursday) was when I won in ’85 on Sunday, and (Friday) may be green and yellow, which was my outfit in ’93,” Langer said. “So it’s more or less to celebrate the two outfits that I put the green jacket on. That’s the idea behind it.”
