VERMILION PARISH, La. (
KLFY) — New developments have emerged regarding a woman charged with first-degree injury to public records. The individual involved, Lashonda Pope, is alleged to have participated in a fraudulent divorce scheme, and recent information suggests that she may not be facing any significant legal consequences.
Teqela Francis, the wife who shared her story in June of 2024 with KLFY expressed her disappointment, stating that she had anticipated that today would mark a turning point toward justice. However, it now appears that the accused, Lashonda Pope, may escape facing any significant consequences for the alleged crime.
Wednesday morning, Pope appeared in front of Judge Frederick Thomas with her lawyer Christopher B. Lear. Pope was scheduled for a pretrial intervention which allows first-time offenders to be required to get an evaluation, take classes or meet with counselors to learn how to properly deal with these underlying reasons.
All first-time offenders are required to pay restitution to their victims as a condition of their participation in the program. Successful completion will normally lead to dismissal of all charges. Re-offenders will be immediately discharged from the program and their criminal case will proceed to prosecution.
“I really do feel like it’s somewhat a slap in the face,” said Francis. She expressed she feels exhausted about the situation and has been trying for two years and the case is still ongoing.
Pope was accused of first-degree injuring public records, which means, if convicted she could be sentenced to five years in prison, fined $5000 or receive both.
“So, it’s okay for anybody to sign legal documents, especially dealing with a fraudulent divorce is okay for them to get by with it,” said Francis. “In the sense of this matter it wasn’t even worth it. I mean, I have an attorney, and I got legal advice and it’s whatever they decide. Hopefully she will comply with the orders because the PTI class from my understanding, is very tough then probation.”
