NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a child.

According to NOPD officers, around 8 a.m. the child was struck by a school bus in the 1400 block of Desire Street.

An investigation revealed that a 6-year-old, identified by family members as Mason Richards, was getting out of a car to get on the school bus when the crash happened. He was taken to a hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries.

While impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash, a routine field sobriety test was administered.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy.

Anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to call NOPD Traffic Fatality investigators at 504-658-6205.
