The incident happened in the area of Interstate 55 and McDowell Road on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said a Capitol police officer was conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle on McDowell Road when another unrelated vehicle approached and opened fire on the officer.
Martin said the officer fired his weapon and struck the suspect, who fled the scene. She said the unidentified suspect stopped at the Marathon gas station on Gallatin Street and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to Martin, a K-9 inside the officer’s patrol vehicle was also struck during the incident. The extent of the K-9’s injuries is unknown at this time. Martin said the Capitol police officer was not seriously physically injured.
Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) will investigate the shooting and will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
