Illinois drivers could soon opt for ‘retro’ license plates issued in 1980s-2000s

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois drivers may soon have the choice to order a license plate with a vintage design used by the state from the 1980s – 2000s.

House Bill 3391 would enable the Secretary of State to issue “retro” license plates, a replica of the license plate design issued from 1983 to 2001.

The plates have a light blue banner across the top with “Illinois” spelled out in the left-hand corner, and “Land of Lincoln” in the right, separated from the plate number below by three thin blue lines.

The “retro” plates would be classified as vanity plates and cost the driver an additional $40 when issued and an additional $27 in yearly renewals. The fees would be used to cover the cost of production and provide “technology and modernization updates.”
