Chicago Teachers Union members begin voting on new contract

CHICAGO — The Chicago Teacher’s Union will vote Thursday on the tentative agreement approved by its House of Delegates.

The in-person paper ballot voting is set for Thursday and Friday. More than 30,000 members are expected to vote.

The tentative agreement only gets finalized if the majority vote of membership approves it.

The contract includes 90 new librarian positions, 215 care managers, 400 additional teacher assistants, 68 new centralized technology coordinator positions and $10 million will be put into sports programs.

The proposed deal will cost around $1.5 billion over the four-year span.

It includes a four-percent cost of living increase in each of the four years of the deal.

Voting at CTU headquarters will wrap up Friday at 6 p.m. The results will be announced on Monday.

If the union collectively votes “yes,” the last step is school board approval.
