The Abilene Regional Airport has been in service to the Big Country for more than 50 years, and officials are looking to make improvements to help them continue that service for another 50. The airport is leaving it up to the citizens of Abilene to decide on a hefty bond that would go towards a large-scale overhaul and update of the facility, which Director of Transportation Services for the City of Abilene, Don Green, elaborated on the project costs.
“We’re talking about a $70 million total project. $20 million is what we’re asking the citizens of Abilene to contribute towards that,” Green shared.
That $20,000,000 Green sighted is a bond proposal for the plan with current designs for the upgrades showing expanded space for the boarding area, a complete rework of the entrance and lobby area, as well as other functional modernizations for key operations throughout the airport. If Abilene citizens do vote in favor of the $20,000,000 bond, that still leaves a $50,000,000 price tag for the project’s budget. A cost that Green said can be covered by various grants.
“Some of those are grants that we get annually, called entitlement grants. We know what those are programmed to be. Some of them are competitive grants,” Green explained.
The competitive grants that Green is referring to come from the Federal Aviation Administration. Green spoke about how the FAA is more likely to choose an airport for these grants when a city provides these types of large-sum bonds to help fund airport projects. Green also expanded on what the tax increase could look like for Abilene citizens if the $20,000,000 bond is approved.
“Per $100,000 appraised value of a home or any property, it’s $13.43 per year. About a $1.12 per month,” Green shared.
