BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — April 8, 2025
A Bloomington teenager faces multiple felony charges after police say he fired a handgun during a confrontation, sending at least one bullet into the second flood window of an apartment.
Gregory Cordell Baker Jr., 18, has been charged with attempted murder, attempted aggravated battery, and attempted battery with a deadly weapon in connection with a shooting incident on March 29.
Bloomington police responded to reports of a fight and gunfire around 7:18 p.m. on Illinois Court. Officers discovered five .40 caliber shell casings in the street and found a bullet lodged in the wall of a nearby apartment, which had went through a second-floor window. No injuries were reported.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators shows Baker, identified by multiple witnesses, approaching a group of individuals near parked cars. After exchanging words, Baker initiated a physical altercation, eventually retrieving a handgun and firing multiple shots as individuals fled. Witnesses reported hearing Baker threaten violence immediately before the shots.
Mikhial Williams, an acquaintance of Baker, told police Baker handed him a handgun prior to the altercation and retrieved it afterward, firing several times. Another witness, Tierre Howard Jr., stated Baker explicitly threatened deadly violence during the confrontation.
Baker fled the scene but was arrested shortly thereafter at a nearby location. Baker reportedly has no permanent residence in Bloomington and had recently returned from Chicago, where he previously resided.
Baker remains in custody at Monroe County Jail pending court proceedings.
