MURRAY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – During National Volunteer Month, the American Red Cross is celebrating the selfless volunteers whose unwavering support makes it possible for Red Cross to assist people in need every day. Volunteers constitute more than 90% of the Red Cross workforce and are the cornerstone of its lifesaving mission.
As part of the world’s largest humanitarian network, some 16 million global Red Cross volunteers
work tirelessly in nearly 200 countries to prevent and alleviate human suffering.
- Here at home, over 300,000 American Red Cross volunteers give their time and compassion to ensure that people are not alone during the most challenging times of their lives.
- Every day, volunteers respond to disasters of all sizes, support blood drives, assist veterans and military families and teach essential lifesaving skills such as first aid and CPR.
- Just like the people they serve, the Red Cross is proud that its volunteers represent a wide array of cultures, backgrounds, ages, lifestyles and beliefs. Everyone is welcome at the Red Cross.
Today, volunteers are more critical than ever as the Red Cross responds to a new major disaster
about every two weeks. These massive events, like storms and wildfires, are on top of the home
fires — which upend families multiple times every day across the country.
- To make sure no one faces an emergency alone, the Red Cross has a critical need for disaster volunteers and is actively recruiting across the country to be ready for disasters of all sizes.
- 2025 has already witnessed a significant number of large disasters, following 2024, which
recorded the second-highest number of billion-dollar disasters in a single year. This included extreme events such as Hurricane Helene and Milton. - While large disasters dominate the headlines, the majority of the nearly 65,00 disasters we
respond to annually are home fires. A single home fire may not garner much national attention, but it causes just as much heartache and need for those affected.
This Volunteer Month, the Red Cross invites you to put on a red vest and join our team. Visit

- While Red Cross needs volunteers of all types, they have a strong need for people to support their lifesaving disaster operations and blood collection efforts.
