The resident, identified as a 96-year-old man, was reportedly found in the pool — along with his electric wheelchair — at Legacy Village of St. George. The incident occurred at around 1 p.m. on April 7, according to police.
“The investigation is ongoing, but there is no indication of foul play,” said Tiffany Mitchell with the St. George Police Department.
In a statement, Legacy Village said it is “cooperating fully with local authorities” as the investigation continues. The statement also says the facility’s pool is up to code.
“The pool involved in this incident is in full compliance with all regulations for pools in independent residential communities,” Legacy Village said.
The facility said its residents “are not continuously monitored” as part of an “independent living program,” but the safety and well-being of residents is the facility’s main focus.
“This is a heartbreaking moment for our community, and we remain committed to upholding the compassionate, person-centered values that define the Legacy experience,” the facility’s statement reads.
Officials with the care home said grief support resources are available for any residents and associates who may be affected by the situation.
“We extend our deepest condolences and are offering our full support to their family during this incredibly difficult time,” Legacy Village said of the deceased resident.
The facility said it will not be providing additional comment, as the investigation is ongoing. Police did not provide additional details about the events leading up to the resident’s death.
