Shawn Lane is being remembered as someone who served the community he lived in, whether it was through the business world or as a government official. The Yellville mayor died Friday night at Hospice of the Ozarks Hospice House.
Lane has served as Yellville’s top official since the beginning of 2007. He had previously been appointed to the city council in 2004.
During his time as mayor, Lane led several city projects and improvement initiatives around Yellville, including park improvements, sidewalk improvements and upgrades to the city’s infrastructure.
Marion County Judge Jason Stumph spoke with KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot News on Monday. While attempting to avoid crying, Judge Stumph described Lane as his “mentor and brother in Christ.” He says Lane had always been there for him, dating back to his days as deputy sheriff. Judge Stumph says as mayor, Lane had a “passion for always improving and bettering the city he loved.”
Lane also worked for Yelcot Communications for 34 years, beginning as a part-time employee in 1991. Yelcot President Sara Zimmerman says, “Shawn quickly became a full time employee working as a plant installer. When Yelcot purchased the rights for Directv in Baxter and Marion counties, Shawn was the installs for most of our customers. Shawn’s last position with Yelcot was Vice President of Operations. He oversaw many fiber construction projects in a six county area. The major one was a 153 mile fiber project from west of Yellville to the White County line south of Batesville that also connected Mountain View. He was very proud of the Fiber-to-the-Home projects, some that have been completed and some we are currently working on, that will provide high quality internet to all of our customers. He also enjoyed working with our customers and other companies to provide our customers and the other company’s customers connections within and outside our network.
“Shawn also did double duty working for Yelcot and being mayor of Yellville. He did a lot for the Yellville area by improving facilities and recruiting new businesses to the area. He worked with an individual to create an endowment for the Layton Cemetery and one for the City Park. He was very proud of his accomplishments as mayor.
“Shawn will be greatly missed at Yelcot. Shawn Lane’s passing is a large loss for Yelcot and the City of Yellville but a greater loss for his family. We all will be keeping his wife and daughters in our thoughts and prayers.”
Lane was always focused on keeping the City of Yellville running in a fiscally responsible manner. In an interview with KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot’s Heather Loftis March 7, 2023, he shared his thoughts on keeping a simple focused budget as well as a humorous moment commenting on Yellville’s Turkey Trot.
