Shift Up Now Foundation provides inspiration for women drivers

INDIANAPOLIS — A seven-time qualifier for the Indianapolis 500 is providing women more opportunities to compete in motor sports.

The Shift Up Now Foundation, an organization founded by Pippa Mann, is run by female racers for female races. Its website states that the foundation is working to find funding, partners and sponsorship for females to compete in motorsports.

“If we give more women more opportunities to have success, that means we see more women standing on podiums, spreading champagne, winning races,” Mann said.

Sabre Cook currently races in the Porsche Carrera Cup Series. Cook said that her goal is to become a factory driver. Cook is one of 15 athletes who received a grant from the foundation. Officials said that $250,000 in grants have been given to drivers across several racing series.

“Being able to have support through things like the Shift up Now Foundation and through one of their grants is essential to helping me stay on track,” Cook said, “have the same resources as my competitors, have the same seat time, which is ultimately what makes or breaks a career is having those resources to be successful.”

Officials said the grants could mean more coaching, better equipment, new tires and more for these drivers. These things can help a young driver develop and compete for wins.

“If she can see her, she can be her,” Mann said. “And that’s a message that extends far beyond the racetrack, but for us, it’s about providing these talented women with the opportunities to compete and to be visible so the next generation of little girls know what’s possible.”
