Frankfort officials urge caution as floodwaters recede

FRANKFORT, Ky. (FOX 56) — Frankfort is still a long way from feeling normal again, but the water level is slowly declining.

“Every time I turn around, there’s somebody else that’s helping. So it’s impressive,” Franklin County Judge/Executive Michael Mueller told FOX 56 News on Tuesday.

LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

As of Tuesday afternoon, there was still more than 45 feet of water in Frankfort, the most seen since 1997. At its peak early Monday morning, the water level was a tenth of an inch away from the record set in 1978 of 48.47 feet. It’s the most Mueller has seen in his lifetime.

“You know, 87% of our community’s not affected. The sun is shining, and depending on where you are in town, you don’t even know a flood happened. But for all the other ones, 100, 200 homes and some businesses, Buffalo Trace being the main one. I mean, they’re deep underwater. It’s going to take months,” he said.

Mueller said the priority for officials right now is still safety; several roads in Frankfort are still closed to the public. And as some families start their cleanup, there will be several steps before homes are livable and back to normal.

“One thing people aren’t thinking about is there’s literally electricity in the water,” Mueller said. “Our local plant board was out on a boat this morning, trying to disconnect as many as possible. And so there’s going to be a protocol that people are going to have to do before they go into their homes. And one of them is all the electrics are going to have to be inspected again. And that’s going to take weeks,” Mueller said.

For those who want to help, the city and county governments have set up a Frankfort-specific fund for monetary donations that is being overseen by the Blue Grass Community Foundation.

“People are going to probably need money more than anything because they’re displaced from their homes. We have two places that are, you know, taking people to shelters, and the Red Cross is running them with food and things like that. So, we’re just figuring it out as we go,” Mueller said.
