As homeowners consider a kitchen revamp or refresh this year, T.K. Wismer, creative director of GE Appliances’ Café brand, taps into the top kitchen design trends guiding consumers’ inspiration boards in 2025. 

Eclectic Design

In 2025, we’re going to see more homeowners define their living spaces with eclectic design for a more meaningful relationship with their homes. This approach skillfully combines elements from various eras and influences — old with new, layers of colors and patterns — and weaves them into a cohesive design story of playful contrasts. 

In the kitchen, this story is elevated by customized appliances. The essence of eclectic design lies in the thoughtful curation of diverse styles to reach a balance that has visual interest and personality without tipping into excess. This trend is ideal for those who view their home as a canvas for their creativity, encouraging a space as unique as the individuals who live in it, and it allows permission to change your mind and re-mix your arrangement.  

Products that evolve with that personal expression through customizable choices will delight consumers.   

Functional and Flexible

As modern lifestyles continue to evolve, functionality accelerates as a major focus for innovation in contemporary home design with a heightened importance on the kitchen. Homeowners are increasingly interested in personalizing their kitchens to make the cooking experience both enjoyable and efficient through innovative appliances, adaptable storage and flexible, accessible and ergonomic designs. 

The concept of flexible living spaces is also growing in importance. While open floor plans have dominated design preferences in recent years, the need for privacy has brought creative approaches to “close our concept.” Curtains, divider screens and retractable walls are becoming popular ways to quickly transform a space to suit our changing needs. These elements not only add value by catering to family life but also give our spaces multiple uses. 

Pantries, sculleries and “dirty kitchens,” or secondary prep spaces, are quickly climbing to the top of homeowners’ wish lists, and these areas are decked out with appliances. Café offers both major and small appliances, like dish drawers, beverage and wine refrigerators and all the countertop appliances a dream pantry can offer to beautifully and functionally outfit these spaces. 

Emotional Details

Décor that resonates is on the rise as discretionary spending is down, and we are expecting more from the products we buy. More function, more visual appeal and more emotion. We are entering our romantic era with a look that is more decorative and art nouveau inspired. This could be from the eclectic design trend and rise of repurposed furniture mixed with new, or the trend toward more organic shapes and gilded finishes. 

We are also “odd-sessed” with odd shapes and forms and products with unique features. Surrealism in accessories and décor is one example of this that is trending again. Next-level customization and products that are tailored to our personal needs and then change with our preferences will be key. With Café appliances, we have customizable hardware finishes, for example, that can not only be chosen when the appliance is purchased, but can be changed out if the customer’s preferences change or they just want a mini makeover of their kitchen down the road. 

Over-the-air updates that add new features to connected Café products as software updates are another example of our products evolving with our client preferences and getting better over time. 

Moody Hues and Cool Metals

Moody hues like deeper wood tones and rich browns and burgundy are going to be big, as predicted. Spaces are getting washed in dark colors like plum, purple and navy for a nocturnal vibe with a touch of mystery. 

In cool contrast, we expect sleeker metals such as chrome and polished nickel to slowly begin to rise in popularity. These metallics not only reflect light so beautifully but also bring a modern twist to interiors, harmonizing well with a rich, saturated palette. Not that brass will lose its main character energy entirely, but we do expect the cool metals to have some real momentum in 2025 and really gain ground in 2026.
