First Indiana Measles case confirmed in Allen County

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — The Allen County Health Department confirmed Monday that one local case of measles has been found in the county, making it the first confirmed case in Indiana this year.

The Allen County Health Department said in a press release that one case of measles was found in an unvaccinated minor within Allen County.

According to the release, the patient is in stable condition and recovering. No further information about the individual is set to be released.

WANE 15 did reach out to the department regarding whether anyone is at risk of exposure, but the department was not able to release any more information.

The Allen County Health Department confirmed with WANE 15 that the last reported case of Measles in Allen County in 2016.

Symptoms of measles typically appear 10 to 14 days after exposure to the virus, though some symptoms can appear as little as seven days after exposure. A red, blotchy rash is usually the most visible symptom, and that appears three to five days after exposure.

Measles symptoms include:

• Rash
• High fever
• Sore throat
• Small white spots inside cheeks
• Red, watery eyes
• Cough
• Runny nose

Measles is highly contagious, and it is spread when someone who is infected sneezes or coughs, sending droplets into the air. It can lead to serious health problems, especially in children younger than 5. Effects of measles include ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, encephalitis (brain inflammation), severe hearing loss and even death.
