FCC invites public feedback on outdated local media regulations

(KTAL/KMSS) — The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from Washington, DC, asks for your voice and help.

What is going on? What is this all about?

The media landscape has changed drastically over the past several years with the rise of technology, streaming platforms, video on demand, social media, artificial intelligence (AI), and so much more.

Knowing who to trust and turn to for reliable and trustworthy information is confusing and complicated.

Outdated FCC regulations make it difficult for local broadcasters to continue growing and investing in the new realities of the media landscape to provide consumers with the high-quality, local news and content they deserve.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr is asking for the public’s help identifying, rethinking, modernizing, or eliminating some of the Commission’s regulations—asking YOU to weigh in on rules that should be revised or eliminated.

The initiative is called “Delete, delete, delete,” and the Chairman announced it last month in a press release and on the social media platform “X.”

FCC Chairman Carr said, “For too long, administrative agencies have added new regulatory requirements in excess of their authority or kept lawful regulations in place long after their shelf life had expired. The FCC is committed to ending all of the rules and regulations that are no longer necessary.  And we welcome the public’s participation and feedback throughout this process.”

Why is local news important?

TV consumers across the US rely on their local TV stations to provide critical information that impacts their lives daily, including severe weather, sports, news, and often lifesaving information about our communities.

Without regulatory relief, local TV stations cannot continue to make investments necessary to bring the community quality news and information that the community members rely on.

The FCC regulates media and telecommunications companies and local television stations like KTAL NBC 6, KMSS FOX 33, and KSHV 45. Chairman Carr is a big supporter of local news.

The FCC is accepting comments from the public through April 14.

If you want to learn more about the FCC’s “Delete, delete, delete” initiative and make your voice heard, we’ve set up a website to help:  You can visit https://yourvoice.nxst.io/
