“We are working on being a no-kill shelter right now. At the end of March, we would have had no kill for eight months. It’s a wonderful feeling. We made the decision about 13 months ago that we were going to make this positive change here, and we just jumped right in, and we haven’t turned back,” shared a representative from Bossier City Animal Control Center.

The adoption process is easy. You can walk through the entire shelter and play with as many dogs or cats as possible. You can also take home your furry friend to see if they work with your life and home situation; you do not have to adopt the same day. They always take the furry friend back if it does not work out.

There is also a foster program available as well.

“Foster program is what saves our animals’ lives. And what you do is you can come and get an animal for the day, the weekend, the week. An unspecified amount of time. And, you take them out, and you spend the day with them, or you take them to your home and show them what home life is. By having a foster program, it keeps them more adoptable because they’re able to get out, decompress, and they’re just more adoptable all the way around,” shared a representative from Bossier City Animal Control Center.

35% of their current population is heartworm positive, and community members may see that as a hindrance to adoption. Heartworm-positive dogs do not change their life span; as long as they are treated, they can live an everyday life.

But as of April 1st, the Bossier City Animal Control Center is going to step up and provide heartworm treatment for the first 30 days to help get some of these animals out and into their FURever homes.

“I think it’s helping all the animals in the community. I mean, there’s so many unwanted, animals out there that aren’t being taken care of, and that’s where we have the ability to step in and save those animals and show them love and show what it’s like to be part of a family,” said Bossier City Animal Control Center.
