BROUSSARD, La. (KLFY)- The opening ceremony for baseball and softball at the Broussard Sports Complex honored fallen Lafayette Police Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette. Jolivette who was killed in the line of duty during a standoff in Jeanerette last July.

In that ceremony, officials, coaches, players, and families of the baseball, softball, and T-ball teams watched on as the family of Jolivette received the honor on his behalf.

Jolivette’s youngest son, Asher Jolivette, had the honors of throwing the first pitch of the season in remembrance of his father. Asher told News 10 he and his father used to play catch with a baseball all the time. He says he was very thankful to kick off this tribute to his father.

“I did this for my dad because he used to pitch the baseball to me as a little kid,” said Asher. “I loved him so much, he was my friend, and he used to play with me all the time, he was super happy.”‘

In addition to the first pitch, Jolivette’s family was also given a framed jersey with the number 411, which was Jolivette’s badge number. His oldest daughter, Ajah Jolivette, said this showed how dedicated her father was in making the community a better environment.

“This tribute means so much to me and my family because they are truly recognizing him as a wonderful man and as a wonderful coach, and it’s showing you how active he was and how much he loves his community,” said Ajah.

Jolivette served three years with the Opelousas Police Department and eleven years with the Lafayette Police Department. Jolivette’s wife, Alexis Jolivette, told News 10 aside from his work in law enforcement, he also enjoyed helping the youth.

“Aside from doing police work he enjoyed being a big kid, a lot of people may not have known that but he was a big kid at heart, his passion was helping people, especially the youth,” said Alexis.

Mayor of Broussard, Ray Borque, says this was a beautiful way to kick off the highly anticipated baseball season.

“We always try to make it a meaningful event to start the baseball season because it’s our families playing ball here so to have the Jolivette family here enjoying us, they are Broussard residents, it just tied everything together,” said Borque.
