Lt. Cameron Roden with Utah Highway Patrol said the incident happened on northbound I-15 near 400 West just before 9 a.m. The student was reportedly walking on the freeway and was struck by two vehicles.
It is currently unclear why the student was walking on the highway as troopers said she did not have a car in the area.
While the victim’s identity has not been publicly released, the Iron County School District confirmed that she was a student within the district.
“We understand that she is currently receiving medical attention at a hospital,” the school district said in a statement. “We are working with law enforcement authorities to further investigate the incident. Our heart goes out to the family, staff and students affected by this tragic accident.”
Iron County School District officials said a support team will be available at both Canyon View Middle and Canyon View High on Monday. Counselors and therapists will meet with any students or staff in need throughout the day and next week, as needed.
Following the crash, law enforcement closed the road near exit 59 to traffic. It reopened at 11 a.m.
