Portland is still up 3-2 in the series but will have to win one of the next two to advance in the postseason.
The Hawks were hoping to finish strong at home in what might have been their last game at the VMC this season.
Prince George came out fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive. Midway through the 1st period, Riley Heidt and Matteo Danis scored two huge goals for the Cougars to take the lead. Late in the first, the Winterhawks responded with a score from Ryder Thompson, ending the first 2-1.
After a goal from Koehn Ziemmer in the second period, the Cougars increased their lead to 3-1.
Only 12 seconds into the third period, Danis scored his second goal of the evening, making it 4-1 and putting more pressure on Portland. A goal by Alex Weiermair gave the Hawks a glimmer of hope, but the Cougars held on tightly. They would easily defeat the home team after scoring three more goals before the clock ran out.
With the series now 3-2, the Winterhawks will head north for Game 6 at the CN Centre in Prince George. If necessary, Game 7 will also be played on the road.
