Storms forecasted overnight in Big Country from stationary front

BIG COUNTRY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Heading into the overnight hours of Wednesday, parts of the Big Country are expected to see storms overnight due to a stationary front that will stall out over the area. Let’s break down the details:

The Storm Prediction Center issued an Enhanced (3/5), Slight (2/5), and Marginal (1/5) risk of storms overnight, with the main risk being towards our eastern counties. The main severe hazards include large hail, damaging winds, lightning, and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out for the southeast part of the viewing area.

The breakdown of these risks is more focused on large hail and damaging winds. Hail is likely to be greater than one inch and even has the potential to be larger than two inches in size. Winds will potentially gust up to 60-70 mph, with the potential for straight-line winds that can be damaging. The risk of tornadoes is low but cannot be ruled out this time, so the potential for a brief spin-up remains.

In terms of our timeline for tonight, we are likely to see things start to pick up in our southern counties starting around midnight and progress into the area as the overnight hours progress. As we continue into Thursday morning, storms are likely to track over the Heartland after the first round of activity. As we know more information about the track of these storms and their characteristics, we will be sure to keep you updated.

Stay safe and stay weather aware!
