Hendricks Co. investigates fatal crash that occurred during Wednesday’s storm

DANVILLE, Ind. — Deputies with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office are investigating after a reported fatal crash during Wednesday evening’s storm that impacted Central Indiana.

According to a news release from the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a crash on CR 75 W, north of CR 200 S in Danville, at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they reported that there were several power lines that were down in the area. The downed power lines were blocking the roadway. Deputies also saw a vehicle, a 2007 blue Dodge pickup truck, on fire near the east edge of the roadway.

The release said there was an unresponsive person on the ground near the vehicle. The person was later identified as 27-year-old Nathan Merritt, a Danville resident.

The release said that deputies could not approach the scene because of the live power lines that were down in the area. After the power was shut off by the power company, rescue personnel approached Merritt, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

An initial investigation found that the vehicle was reportedly traveling northbound on CR 75 W when it reportedly struck downed power lines in the roadway. At one point, Merritt reportedly exited the vehicle and came into contact with the power line.

Officials with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office said that this crash continues to be under investigation.
