BB gun fired from off-campus hits student at South Jones High

ELLISVILLE, Miss. (WHLT) – Ellisville police are investigating after a baseball player was shot with a BB gun.

The incident occurred at the baseball field at South Jones High School around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2.

Police said the juvenile victim was transported to a local hospital by their parents. Officers at the scene determined that there was no perceived threat to the public.

According to investigators, the BB gun was found to have been fired from a residence off campus and struck the student on campus. Police said another juvenile reportedly fired the gun.

Once the investigation is complete, the report will be forwarded to the Jones County Youth Court for review.

The Jones County School District released a statement about the incident.

The Jones County School District is aware of an incident that occurred during an after-school baseball practice, in which a student-athlete sustained an injury. According to law enforcement, the injury appears to have resulted from a ricochet or errant shot from a pellet gun fired from a nearby residence, not from school property.

We want to emphasize that no pellet gun was brought onto school grounds. The shot in question originated from outside the school’s baseball facility. As soon as the incident occurred, parents, law enforcement, and all appropriate authorities were immediately notified, and the situation was handled with the utmost seriousness and concern for student safety.

Unfortunately, misinformation has been circulating online, suggesting that a pellet gun was present on school grounds during the school day. This claim is not consistent with the facts of the situation. We urge our community to rely on verified information from school officials and law enforcement rather than speculation or social media rumors.

The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority, and we will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement as they review this matter. We appreciate the support and understanding of our community as we ensure our schools remain a safe environment for all students. Thank you!
