According to the Miami Herald, Marcy Rheintgen, 20, was arrested by Capitol police on March 19th after alerting state officials of a plan to use the restroom in protest of a Florida law.
The 2023 legislation bans individuals from using bathrooms in correctional facilities, schools, or public buildings that do not match their biological sex.
Rheintgen sent letters to Florida lawmakers alerting them of a plan to use the women’s bathroom and included a self-identifying photo.
“I know that you know in your heart that this law is wrong and unjust,” Rheintgen said in the letter. “I know that you know in your heart that transgender people are human too, and you can’t arrest us away. I know that you know that I have dignity. That’s why I know that you won’t arrest me.”
According to reports, Rheintgen was greeted by two officers upon arrival, but Rheintgen decided to use the bathroom anyway. The officers then said they would issue a notice to appear at a future court date, but arrested Rheintgen on charges of trespassing after Rheintgen became “sassy.”
Rheintgen returned to Illinois and must fly back to Flordia for future court hearings.
