Before active weather moves in, having a plan with your friends and family is always a good idea. Everyone should know where to go and what to do with only a moment’s notice.
If a tornado warning is issued and you have a basement, you should go there and get low to the ground while covering your head. A helmet, mattress, or pillows are all options to help protect yourself from flying debris.
If your home doesn’t have a basement or you are in an apartment or dorm room, get to the lowest level and shelter in an interior room, such as a bathroom or closet, away from windows.
Get low and use objects like a helmet or mattress to shield your body. If you are sheltering in a bathroom, a bathtub can offer protection.
If a tornado touches down while you are driving, staying in your car should be the last option.
It is best to pull over and get into a sturdy building. If that isn’t an option, get down into a low-lying area such as a ditch and cover your head.
Never shelter in your car under bridges and overpasses. They can act as a wind tunnel during severe winds, worsening conditions.
Always remember sheds, storage buildings, campers/RVs, and mobile homes are not a safe place to shelter when severe weather strikes.
