Utah Indigenous Fashion Week returns in full swing at the Natural History Museum

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Utah Indigenous Fashion Week is back, bringing an explosion of color, culture, and creativity to the state. This year’s event is bigger than ever before. For the first time in its three-year history, the Natural History Museum is hosting fashion week to accommodate the growing demand for seats.

“More than 300 tickets sold out in just three hours,” said Jessica Wiarda, co-director of Utah Indigenous Fashion Week, in an interview with ABC4. While tickets for the main event – the fashion show on Friday—are no longer available, those interested can still join the waitlist, though it’s already over 200 people long.

This year, 16 talented designers will showcase their work. Each collection is deeply rooted in the unique cultural traditions of their respective tribes and nations. Wiarda, a member of the Hopi Tribe of the Navajo Nation, shared that her designs draw inspiration from the Katsina dolls she grew up with. Her pieces blend simple geometric shapes with vibrant colors, reflecting the rich traditions of her heritage. “We’re not a monolith,” Wiarda emphasized.

The theme of this year’s fashion week is “Clothed in Mother: Building a Climate of Hope.” The collections aim to honor Mother Earth and serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all people within the same ecological system.

That’s why many of the pieces have a heavy focus on sustainability, which can be seen through Sahar Khadjenoury, one of the designers in the show who’s making sustainability vogue.

“I’ve got a cork bodice for one of my gowns and I’m using dead stock fabric,” Khadjenoury said. Her designs also intertwine her Navajo and Persian roots to create a truly unique collection.

While tickets to the fashion show may be sold out, there are plenty of opportunities to engage with the event. A series of public, free events will be held throughout the week. The festivities kick off with a launch party at Spy Hop rooftop. On Tuesday, attendees can join an Education Day at the Natural History Museum, featuring Indigenous games and interactive events. On Saturday, a panel discussion with the designers will provide insights into the creative processes behind the stunning runway pieces.

In addition to enjoying the runway show, attendees will have the chance to purchase the featured designs. To learn more about Utah Indigenous Fashion Week and stay updated on the events, visit the official website or follow the event on social media.
