This afternoon, winds could gust up to 55 mph across parts of the west desert region and southeastern Utah. Wind Advisories have been issued for these locations through Monday night. Along with the gusty winds, blowing dust could be an issue for western Utah along with choppy lake waters across southeastern Utah.
A strong cold front will move into the Beehive state starting late this afternoon, then progress south throughout Monday evening.
Ahead of the front, increasing coverage of valley rain and mountain snow is expected. The rain in the valleys could be locally heavy at times with a chance for a few isolated rumbles of thunder. Snow will begin light, but is expected to pick up for a period of heavy snow in the mountains for our Monday evening.
Snowfall rates could possibly peak in the 0.50″ to 1.00″ range through the night. Colder air will work south, so rain will change over to snow for the central mountains and even the I-15 corridor from Nephi down through the Richfield area near I-70.
Overnight the colder air works its way down to the valley floors. We expect rain to mix with and changeover to wet snow, even in the valleys just in time for our Tuesday morning commute. Accumulations in the valleys should be mostly light but will have to keep an eye out for any potential lake enhancement.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Wasatch Mountains, north and south of I-80. The Advisory also includes the Wasatch Plateau/Book Cliffs, central mountains, and southwestern Wyoming.
The upper Cottonwoods are expecting anywhere from 10-20″ of snow, with most northern mountains looking at 6-12″ on average. The Wasatch Back will see around 2-6″ while Park City could see over 6″. The east Benches could see 1-4″, while the Wasatch Front Valleys could see up to 2″.
All in all, not a big snow producer for valley locations, but some accumulations will be very possible.
Snow showers will continue across northern Utah off and on through Tuesday afternoon. A secondary wave moves into the area on Tuesday night into Wednesday bringing one more round of possible light accumulating snow.
Beyond Wednesday, the overall pattern is for drier and warmer conditions. Just how much? We will finetune over the next few days. The upcoming weekend is looking nice with the return of sunshine and temperatures warming into the 50s and 60s across the north, with 60s and 70s across southwestern Utah.
Stay tuned!
