Becky Prejean is the executive director of Dreams Come True of Louisiana, a group granting wishes to kids ages 3-18 with life-threatening illnesses to make their dreams a reality. She left her job as a bookkeeper about 40 years ago to volunteer her time with Dreams Come True. She has served as treasurer of the nonprofit for nine years before becoming president.
The organization not only blesses the child but the entire family. About 40 to 60 families across Louisiana are impacted every year. Prejean said that while the child goes through a lot, so do their siblings.
“We have been blessed with every application that has been approved that we could grant the dream. And let me tell you, there’s a lot of big-hearted people out there,” Prejean said.
Prejean recently surprised 8-year-old Dominic Tramonte, who has a rare form of bone cancer, with a trip to Disney World. She said it’s seeing the kids run up to her, hug her and thank her that keeps her going.
For Prejean, helping families brings purpose to her life. The organization strives to give kids an experience that makes them feel normal.
“We have the Christmas party and then we have the fashion show where Dream Kids model for local boutiques,” Prejean said.
The nonprofit’s mission is to educate everyone on the mental, physical, and emotional toll an illness takes on children.
“Again, people have no idea. It takes them all day for their chemo, their blood transfusion. They stay in the hospital for weeks, months,” Prejean said.
Prejean said making kids’ dreams come true isn’t just for a moment; it’s a memory that lasts a lifetime.
“We don’t forget about our kids. I keep in touch with them. I go to funerals. You get close to them,” Prejean said.
