UDOT is adding new lights on traffic signals at several intersections — here’s why

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Over the next five years, the Utah Department of Transportation will be installing new devices to traffic lights at intersections throughout the state.

Simple in design, the new devices are under-mast LED lights and are designed to add light to intersections where typical lighting can not be installed.

UDOT said each light unit can be attached to the bottom of a pre-existing signal pole’s arm. This eliminates the need to pay for and install an entirely new light post while avoiding complications with overhead power lines.

When turned on, the new LED lights will act as a spotlight where someone may be walking, jogging, or biking across.

“Crosswalk users can often see a car before the car sees them, especially at night,” UDOT Traffic Signal Supervisor David Townsend said. “Under-mast lights immediately help a driver notice areas where they should be cautious. These lights will help crosswalk users and motorists be safer, exist harmoniously, and confidently navigate to their destinations.”

As of Friday, March 28, UDOT has installed about 150 of these LED spotlights at state-owned intersections throughout Utah. Just in the past week, UDOT reported several under-mast lights have been installed in Ogden and St. George with even more planned across Utah in the near future.

UDOT said Utah’s roads have reportedly seen an average of 43 pedestrian fatalities since 2019. There have been nine pedestrian fatalities in the few months of 2025 alone. UDOT’s engineers hope adding more lighting to intersections can help improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable road users.

“Under-mast lights may seem like a small change, but everything we do, from the smallest light installation to the creation of big, brand-new bridges is focused on making our roads safer,” Townsend said. “Adaptations like this are really important.”

UDOT said it will prioritize intersections and areas that have little to no lighting or have a higher rate of pedestrian crashes. The department said its goal is to improve lighting at every state-owned signaled intersection crosswalk within the next five years.
