According to Rockford Police, officers spotted the stolen vehicle at the Mobil Gas Station at Halsted and N. Main around 11:25 p.m. on Sunday, March 30th.
A Rockford Police K9 located the vehicle at Allington and Paradise, and the two suspects got out and ran.
Officers with the department’s Specialized Community Oriented Police Enforcement (SCOPE) caught and arrested Smith, the driver, in the 3000 block of Church Street and said a loaded handgun was recovered.
SCOPE officers also observed Watkins enter a car near the 1600 block of Pierce Avenue. He was apprehended a short time later during a traffic stop.
Smith faces charges of Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Resisting Arrest, and No Valid Firearm Owner’s Identification.
Watkins has been charged with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Resisting Arrest.
Both men were booked into the Winnebago County Jail.
