According to court documents, 32-year-old Daqawn Peoples was arrested and preliminarily charged with Dealing in a Controlled Substance Resulting in Death, a Level 1 Felony.
An investigation was launched on Jan. 23, 2025, after officers with the Anderson Police Department executed a search warrant at a residence located in the 1600 block of W. 20th Street.
During their search, police reportedly seized around 1.5 kilograms of a “brown substance” stored in vacuum-sealed baggies. These later yielded positive results for fentanyl, court documents said. Detectives also found a 45 caliber Glock handgun and a loaded drum magazine.
When officers arrived, Peoples was reportedly standing on the front porch of the residence. He allegedly retreated inside before police apprehended him at a different residence in the 1600 block of W. 21st Street.
Peoples went on to allegedly admit that he possessed the handgun and “dog food”, which court documents indicated was a reference to the suspected fentanyl and heroin. The suspect also confessed that he had sold “dope” to people, court documents said. Police did not provide the name of the individual to whom Peoples is alleged to have supplied the fatal dose of fentanyl.
Court documents noted that Peoples is barred from possessing firearms due to a previous conviction of armed robbery.
Peoples was arrested and transported to the Madison County Jail, where he faces the following preliminary charges:
- Dealing in a Controlled Substance Resulting in Death (Level 1 Felony)
- Dealing in a Narcotic Drug (Level 2 Felony)
- Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon (Level 4 Felony)
According to online court records, Peoples is scheduled to appear in Madison Circuit Court 4 on April 15 for a status hearing.
