Three men arrested in New Orleans, stolen car, guns recovered

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Three men have been arrested after allegedly stealing a car from a home in the Lower 9th Ward on Thursday, March 27.

According to the Louisiana State Police, troopers with Troop NOLA was notified to the theft of a Dodge Charger around 1 p.m. They then began searching for the vehicle and determined that it was in New Orleans East.

Troopers reportedly found the Charger on Chef Menteur Highway just before 2 p.m. and attempted a traffic stop, but were led on a pursuit. The chase came to an end when the Charger hit the back of an RTA bus near Michoud Boulevard.

Three suspects, identified as 18-year-old Brynel Smith, 17-year-old Kameron Stephen and 17-year-old Kareem Stephen, were allegedly in the car, and they all fled on foot before being arrested shortly thereafter, with one of them reportedly being found inside of a dumpster.

Troopers say three stolen firearms were discarded during the suspects’ alleged escape attempt, one of which was modified with an extended magazine and a “switch” to function automatically.

All three suspects were booked into the Orleans Parish Prison and face the following charges.

Smith:

  • Aggravated flight from an officer.
  • Resisting arrest.
  • Possession of a stolen firearm.
  • Possession of stolen things.
  • Unauthorized use of a moveable.
  • Possession of stolen firearm.
  • Illegal carrying of weapons.
  • Obstruction of justice.
  • Hit-and-run.
  • Possession of schedule I.
  • Traffic related charges.
  • Warrants for simple burglary.
  • Theft of a motor vehicle.
  • Attempted theft of a motor vehicle.

Kameron:

  • Resisting arrest.
  • Possession of a stolen firearm.
  • Unauthorized use of a movable.
  • Possession of a modified firearm.
  • Obstruction of justice.

Kareem:

  • Resisting arrest.
  • Possession of a stolen firearm.
  • Possession of stolen things.
  • Unauthorized use of a movable.
